BMB 2007-2011
RIP

The Boho Ball started in a derelict church hall with a eclectic group of bands, sideshow circus performers and a whole lot of freaky folk way back in 2007, it’s primary purpose was, and still is, to throw a royal party that celebrates and showcases underground music, sideshow circus and acts as a space for wild ceremony.
Inspired by traditions of vaudeville, baroque, psychedelic happenings and old art school balls of the 70’s. It has been a shifting and uncontrollable event that has toured nationally on a shoestring featuring over 100 performers on some nights across four stages. Produced a series of videos, brought international guests and continued to be an iconic event in Melbourne’s younger art communities.
Remaining a grassroots cost whilst refusing an elitist attitude towards it’s audience which has grown in leaps and bounds since locating from several warehouses and circus tents to The Thornbury Theatre, and now The Royal Melbourne Hotel for it’s final enchantment.

As this 9th September will mark the 9th Bohemian Masquerade Ball and it’s death.
Artist and designer Sarah Cook has fittingly chosen a Mexican Day Of Dead style decorated skull as the poster she will create for this last and final ball.

Headliners The Barons Of Tang played one of their first shows back in 2007 at the ball and they’ll be playing their first show back in Australia after a successful 3 month tour of US and Canada playing to packed festival audiences and hopping the anarchist underground circuit.

Along with the collection of obscure DJ’s, one off projects, installations and performances in the old jail cells (the Royal Melbourne Hotel served as the West Melbourne police barracks) will be none other than:

THE BARONS OF TANG
Lashing Tango, Rockabilly, Latin and Gypsy with breaks, hard hitting guitar riffs, double kick blast beats and massive horn arrangements, The Barons of Tang serve up their self described ‘gypsy deathcore’ direct to Melbourne off the back of their US and Canada tour.

CLAIRY BROWNE & THE BANGIN’ RACKETTES

Fierce leading lady Clairy Browne and her
harmonizing girl group, The Bangin’ Rackettes,
have been tearing down the house at venues all
over the country. The nine piece rhythm and blues
big band’s original songs take you through
northern soul, jump blues, doo-wop, ska and gospel
with influences ranging from Etta James, Tina
Turner and Prince to D’Angelo and Salt n’ Pepa.

MOJO JUJU
Drawing inspiration from film noir and hard-boiled
fiction, the Jazz age, Latin American ‘Pachuco’
culture of the 1930’s & 40’s and early blues music,
Backed by devilish saxophone, drums and
double bass to create the atmosphere of
sophisticated theatre, back alley secrets
and a skid row gin house in full swing.

MARTIN MARTINI
(performing several short sets in the
jail cells for selected audience members)

Martini sings of darkness and failure,
crisis and loss, but with a profound
sense of optimism - of understanding,
not outrage. Don’t miss this rare
performance with Melbourne’s
favourite underground songwriter.

SEX ON TOAST
With a complete utter disregard for musical genre,
as well as a great respect for their vast array of influences,
Sex on Toast create original music that is both colourful
And electrifying, transporting you from late 70’s smooth
rock to grindcore in the blink of an eye.
The group can be seen around Melbourne in various
different guises; in jazz trios, accompanying cabaret divas,
staging hideous dada performance pieces or shitting
themselves onstage with members of Mr. Bungle &
Secret Chiefs 3.

CUMBIA COSMONAUTS
Science fiction soundtrack lost in the Amazon jungle;
tropical vibes in orbit; donkeys with lazers;
psychedelic accordion and cheap Casio riffs; and
ultimately an infectious Caribbean shuffle-beat
anyone can dance to.
The Cumbia Cosmonauts are at the forefront of the
growing global phenomenon of Nueva Cumbia.

HIATUS KAIYOTE
From future hip-hop to soul nostalgia; from flamenco
dreamscapes to dubstep opera, Hiatus Kaiyote weave
together a rich world of sounds and honey-velvet vocals
into songs both beautiful and dark, songs of wonder
and mystery.

FRANKIE VALENTINE
Burlesque performer, vintage costumer and all
around femme fatale, Frankie Valentine, sets old time glamour on
fire with a signature sensuality that has all things smoldering in
her wake. Frankie perfects the classic art of the strip tease with a
personal and contemporary approach to burlesque, which has
seen her gracing stages around the country with her innovative
character based routines.
Wild, inspired and criminally seductive.

SNAPPY YABBY & THE SNAG PARTY
Surrealist indie experiment SN&TSP comb
rhapsodised guitar lines with chilling vocals and
childhood fantasies to become your favourite
band you’ve never heard of.
